What is Amputee Matters?
Amputee Matters is an independent association of individual therapy practices, with a special interest in Amputee Rehabilitation, working within the physical therapy centre of RehabMatters. We offer our clients access to a wide range of rehabilitation professionals all at one location. Our therapists work as a close-knit, organised team focused on a patient's individual needs.
We offer the following services:
- Initial consultations with prosthetist, physiotherapist and biokineticist to advise on prosthesis prescription, functional goals, and general muscle strengthening programs
- Prosthesis prescription, manufacturing and adjustments on-site
- Gait rehabilitation, pre- and post-prosthesis
- Pain-management advise and treatment options
- Electrotherapy to stimulate healing
- Sport-rehabilitation post-amputation
- On-site, secondary referrals for occupational therapy, psychology or a dietician if necessary
- Regular check-ups to promote long-term satisfaction and achievement of high-level functional goals
How do I get an appointment with Amputee Matters?
Because we are a multidisciplinary service that has a focus on the individual needs of our clients, we’d like to understand your therapy needs before setting up the appropriate appointments. Consequently, please email morningsiderehab@gmail.com or call 011 803 6649 and request a referral form for Amputee Matters to be sent to you. Once you have returned this form, we will contact you within 24 hours (during working hours) to set up the appropriate appointment/s for you.
What happens after my initial assessment?
You, or your referring doctor and/ or medical aid will be forwarded a report or letter detailing our recommendations based on the assessment findings and your discussions. This will include specifications of appropriate equipment and an estimate of the costs (proforma invoice) as well as short-term rehabilitation needs. We are unable to provide fixed quotations for quantities of therapy due to the uncertainty of personal needs. We will however tell you the costs per session of these services.
What about the cost of these therapies?
The individual therapy practices within Amputee Matters have different billing practices and policies, although in general we work at, or below medical aid rates. The specifics of this information can be requested once you have filled in the referral form and we know which therapy you would like to be assessed for initially.
What will Amputee Matters expect of me?
As a client you will be asked to participate fully in your rehabilitation plan. This may include some form of “homework”, for example an exercise routine, monitoring the equipment behaviour during different activities and provide feedback so we can adjust equipment or amend your rehabilitation plan. Your full participation will assist in gaining better results making your rehabilitation plan more successful. You must inform the staff if at any time you are not happy with how your rehabilitation is progressing. You will need to give 24 hours notice to change an appointment, otherwise a cancellation fee will be charged.
We have strong opinions on what makes for successful treatment programmes, apart from our professional competence. The best outcome can only be achieved when there is full commitment from both the therapy team and the patient.
