Orthotics and Prosthetics at RehabMatters
Orthotists are trained in the science and art of custom designing and constructing appliances to help in the prevention and correction of deformities that may hinder a person’s ease of movement. These also aid in support and alignment helping to improve function of the movable part of the body. Orthotic appliances aim to improve posture, function or mobility, such as braces, splints or moulded shoe inserts.
Prosthetists are specialists in designing, fitting and fabricating artificial limbs. A prosthesis is an artificial extension that replaces a missing part of the body as is the case in an amputation.
The orthotics and prosthetics practice at Rehabmatters has a special interest in:
- Prosthetic treatment (upper and lower limb) making use of contemporary techniques and components
- Custom-made bracing and splinting of the upper and lower body as well as quality pre-manufactured general and sports bracing.
- Drawing on podiatry experience as well as that of an orthotist we have a special interest in lower limb biomechanical assessment and the subsequent treatment of the foot and lower limb. This is put to good effect for the sports person as well as for everyday pains and strains.
- Specialised shoes (Where the use of general footwear is inappropriate or impossible we provide extra depth/width shoes or custom-made shoes)
- Paediatrics, here we provide much focus on custom splinting especially of the lower limbs.
- Walking aids and wheelchairs (motorised and non motorized) are available for purchase.
At Rehabmatters the orthotists and prosthetists work closely with the rest of the therapy team to obtain the best results from a combined approach.
